Organization > Sookmyung Women’s University

A global leader of women's education, Sookmyung is where changes begin!
Sookmyung Women’s University is Korea’s first national private women’s school. It was founded in 1906 during the latter stages of the Korean empire, one of the most difficult periods in the nation’s history. We have worked tirelessly to meet our motto ‘save our nation through women’s education’ and today, we boast over 100,000 alumni and 13,000 students and have grown to become Korea’s leading women’s university. Throughout its long history of over 100 years, Sookmyung has accumulated invaluable educational experience, research capabilities, and community service experience. We plan to build on this tradition and become a global leader in women’s education. To achieve this mission, we will put forth every ounce of effort into the following.
Sookmyung History

In 1906, following the year when the Eulsa Treaty(Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty) was made, and the fate of the nation was uncertain, the imperial family established its first national women’s university, the Myungshin Girl’s School. This school was founded because the imperial family believed that talent and skill development through education was the only way to save the nation.
Three years later, Myungshin changed its name to Sookmyung Women’s School, and then to Sookmyung Women’s Junior College in 1938. In 1948, it became Sookmyung Women’s College and took charge of its mission as a higher educational institution for women. After emerging as Sookmyung Women’s University in 1955, it became a renowned women’s university in Korea. Fostering numerous excellent graduates and contributing to our nation’s development since its foundation, Sookmyung is preparing a new chapter in education while honoring its 100 year old history and tradition.
Founded on national pride and academic assets, Sookmyung cultivates highly talented and accomplished students. Sookmyung then takes these students and transforms them into true global citizens who are capable of changing the world. Sookmyung is proud to be Korea’s first national women’s university and will continue along its magnificent journey toward becoming one of the world’s leading universities.
